Summary: On my Honor by Marion Dane Bauer is a Newbery Honor book that I recently picked up from the library. The book is about two best friends, Joel and Tony, who go to the State park after promising their Dad that they will only go to the park and no where else. Joel dares Tony to go swimming in a dangerous river. Tony is not good at swimming and dies. Joel feels very guilty for being responsible for Tony’s death and for not keeping the promise that he made to his dad.
My opinion: This was a very sad, but great book to read. The way the author describes Joel and Tony swimming and Joel discovering Tony is lost and then finding him dead is very written and I could imagine myself being in his place. Joel feels bad because he was guilty for his friend. I would really feel bad too because my best friend dies and I’m the one who’s guilty. The lesson in this book is that you should always be safe and don’t go to dangerous places.
This was the first book of this series for me. Zac Power is a 12 year old spy who keeps getting into one adventure after the other.
I loved this book and I would be very interested in reading more of the series. There was a cool mystery in it, lots of secret agents, and a thrilling adventure. It was one of those books that you couldn’t put down until the end!
I don’t know why, but currently, I just seem to be picking up the Geronimo Stilton books a lot! I think I just need to finish the entire series and only then will my brain let me move onto something else 🙂
Summary: In the Ghost Pirate Treasure, Billy wakes up and sees holes in the backyard. Then he decides to call Creepella to investigate. Then they go on a wild adventure to discover the Ghost Pirate Treasure!
My opinion: This was a very funny book like all the others. It was a very exciting book. It was a little bit scary too!
Summary: The Monster’s Ring by Bruce Coville is another book in the Magic Shop Series. So far, I have read only two of those books and the only things in common in the series are Mr. Elives, his magic shop and two rats! A 5th grade boy named Russell goes to the magic shop and ends up buying a mysterious ring “Monster’s Ring”. The ring comes with the instructions that if you twist it while doing a magic chant, you will turn into a monster by growing horns and hair on the face. If you twist it twice, fangs are bared. Twist it thrice and….no one will dare! Russell uses the ring on Halloween and then goes out of control. Read the book to find out more about this enthralling adventure!
My opinion: When I read the back of this book, it was so interesting that it looked like a cliffhanger to me and I just had to start reading it right away! When Russell got bullied by Eddie, I was infuriated for him and when he started scaring Eddie, I was rooting for Russell. The story is scary in parts, as well as very comical at times, especially when describing Russell’s interaction with his Dad. Definitely a must read.
Summary: Frindle by Andrew Clements is about this boy Nick in 5th grade, whose teacher Ms. Granger is very strict and everyone says that she has x-ray vision. Ms. Granger once explains to the class how words are made, which gives Nick an idea that he would call a pen, a “frindle”. He goes to the store and asks to buy a “frindle”. Soon, everyone in his school starts calling it frindle and he becomes famous and comes on the news! 10 years later, when he is in Junior College, Ms. Granger sends him a package containing a new dictionary which has the word “frindle” in it. And in the end, it says “Made by Nicholas Allen, American”!
My opinion: I loved the story because this boy invents a cool new word. This is a funny book which I read in just one day, maybe in about 2 hours. I was very interested to know what would happen to Nick and “frindle” so I just couldn’t put the book down. It also has good illustrations and Nick has inspired me to invent a word myself. Who knows, maybe one day you might see my name in a dictionary. Ha ha ha! 🙂
Summary: Dav Pilkey, the famous author of the Captain Underpants series has written this hardcover book called the Dumb Bunnies. I am laughing hysterically just writing about this book! The main characters in this book are Poppa, Mama and Baby bunny who are each dumber than the other. They do dumb things like eat chips with a straw, if their porridge is cold, they blow on it, if it is hot, they warm it in the microwave and when it’s just right, they pour it on their pants! They had a picnic in the carwash, they went ice skating “in” the lake and they “bowled a home run at the library”!
My opinion: The funniest part of the book for my mom was when they were going to the city, they decided to take their bikes, to get some exercise, and ended up carrying the bikes on top of their cars, because they are so dumb! My favorite part was when Baby Bunny flushed Little Red Goldilocks down the toilet and Poppa Bunny said “That’s my boy!” This is a very funny book and would appeal to young as well as old readers.
Summary: Today, I read A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon, the famous author of the “No, David” books, to PinkNinja. This is about a girl who loves lima beans but she never ate them because her friends thought that it was weird of her to like them. So, she develops a mysterious disease which makes her skin turn different patterns like stripes, dots etc. Her parents call the doctors but even the experts can’t figure out what’s happening to her. All the news reporters find out and there is a crowd outside her ouse waiting for her to come out. Finally a mysterious lady, sweet as a strawberry, offers a cure for her illness.
My opinion: This book teaches an important lesson. And that is, never stop doing what you love even if the other people around you think its weird or different. In this story, the girl stopped eating lima beans for fear of being made fun of by her friends, and developed a case of stripes! She only got cured when she ate her favorite food.
